What is SEO?

Search engine ranking, is the order in which a website appears on a search engine results from a certain keyword, getting your site to the top of that ranking is done through search engine optimization or SEO.

The easiest way we can explain the very technical workings of SEO is by comparing it to the American credit score system, while the credit score system is less complex the example still serves it purpose.

In the credit score system you have 3 major reporting bureaus; Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union, each have their own formulas to calculate data received from other sources and give a result or credit score. The same is true with search engines, although there are 8 major U.S. English speaking search engines and close to 1000 minor ones, all receiving and calculating data using their own formulas to come up with a ranking to where a website ends up on the results for a search term.  While credit bureaus rely on creditors and collection agencies to send them information, search engines are a bit more proactive, once you submit your site, search engines send out their own bots or spiders to collect data, however bots are not programmed to interpret a website as we see it, they look for as you said proper language, strings, ext. this is where my analogy ends, because now it gets complicated.

The bots crawl the internet continually, collecting data on changes to content, keywords, links on other sites leading back to yours, and a million other little things relevant to ranking.

The formulas while different for each search engine, they all rely on some common data:

  • Links; the more you have out there pointing back to your site, the more bots will follow them and end up back on your site.
  • Keywords to content; the more relevant your keywords are to your content, the higher you page rank will be.
  • Reliability; How long has your site been there and how long will it be there in the future.

Most importantly you can never forget that a search engine is a business, and like any business they want to ensure that their customers are happy and keep coming back, so they want the most relevant, reliable source of information to be the first thing the customer sees when they get the results of their search. For example if you went to google and typed in post office, if the us postal service wasn’t on the first page, would you continue using google?
